Shadow Wood is a gated golf community within The Brooks, a large master planned development between US 41 and Interstate 75. It sits a short drive north of our Bonita Springs showroom. For homeowners here, a remodel is usually less about fixing a house and more about bringing a well built home up to date.
The Shadow Wood Country Club is a private, member owned club with 54 holes of championship golf, renovated by architect Rees Jones. Membership is optional for residents. The surrounding community holds about 1,481 homes across 34 neighborhoods, with lakes, fairways and nature preserves woven between them.
The housing mix is broad. There are custom estate homes, single family homes on golf and lake lots, coach homes and a smaller number of villas. Public listing data places much of the construction in the early 2000s, and some estate neighborhoods were built between 2002 and 2007.
Where Shadow Wood sits
The Brooks lies within the boundaries of the Village of Estero, which incorporated in 2014. Many homes were built before the village existed, and some still carry a Bonita Springs mailing address. For permits, the jurisdiction of the parcel is what counts, so confirm it before you apply.
A separate community called Shadow Wood Preserve sits farther north near Mullock Creek, with a Fort Myers address. It is not part of The Brooks. If that is your community, confirm its jurisdiction separately.
Updating a home from the early 2000s
A Shadow Wood kitchen from that era often has good bones and a generous footprint. Common updates include replacing raised panel cabinets, swapping out original granite, improving lighting and rethinking an island that no longer fits how the family cooks. Our kitchen remodeling page outlines how we approach that kind of project.
Primary baths of the same age often have a large soaking tub that rarely gets used. Many owners now prefer a walk in shower, a wider vanity and better storage. Coach homes and villas bring tighter footprints, so every inch of cabinetry and closet space has to earn its place.
Outdoor living on the course
Lanais here often face a fairway, a lake or a preserve. An outdoor kitchen or lanai update should frame those views rather than block them. Materials need to stand up to sun, humidity and the occasional stray golf ball.
Working inside the gates
Gated golf communities usually have their own process for contractors. These are typical questions to ask your association: Does it require architectural review for exterior work? Are there set hours for crews? Does it need proof of contractor insurance before entry? The answers vary by neighborhood within Shadow Wood.
